Tips for Working Parents

Being a parent is a full-time job, so when a parent takes on an outside of the home job, it’s like she’s working two jobs. This can make for a hectic and busy life with a lot going on at all times. The secret to keeping sane and working outside of the home as a parent is keeping organized, and asking for help.

If you’re married and working outside of the home, you can balance duties with your spouse. Both of you should contribute to house work, taking care of the kids and have a right to alone time. Make sure your arrangement is fair and that you’re both getting some time for you. Come up with a schedule and stick to it. In the schedule lay out who takes care of cleaning each day and make sure to include who is responible for dropping off and picking up the kids. Plan out meals for the week and specify who will be responsible for the cooking each night.

If you aren’t married, all responsibility will fall on you alone. In this case, staying organized is key. Write out a schedule each week and include any events and large homework assignments for the kids. Keep your house clean and organized to make the days run smoother. Make sure to assign age-appropriate chores to your children so that they can help ease your load.

Don’t be afraid to ask for outside help to help you balance a job and a family. Ask people in the community that offer help when you need it. Also take advantage of any free childcare programs at your job or in your work. These can be a huge source of relief to your pocket book and make set your mind at ease.
